Leadership Opportunities at Mercer Island Chamber
A strong Chamber board director is someone who cares about the success of the local business community and is willing to contribute their perspective, experience, relationships, and leadership to the work of the Chamber.
Board service is more than attending meetings. Strong directors come prepared, participate in discussion, think about what is best for the organization as a whole, support the Chamber’s mission, and are willing to help move priorities forward.
We value directors who bring different industries, backgrounds, skills, and perspectives to the table. Board members do not need to be experts in every area, but they should be engaged, collaborative, dependable, and willing to contribute where their experience is most useful.
Per the Chamber’s bylaws, applicants must have been a Chamber member in good standing for at least one year. Eligible applicants are considered based on the current needs and composition of the Board.
A strong director should:
- Care about the Chamber as an organization, not only what membership provides to their individual business.
- Be willing to participate, prepare, ask questions, and contribute to discussions.
- Think strategically about the Chamber’s role in supporting the broader business community.
- Bring useful experience, expertise, perspective, relationships, or community knowledge.
- Be dependable and willing to follow through when they commit to something.
- Work collaboratively and respectfully with other directors, staff, members, community partners, and public-sector leaders.
- Be willing to support the Chamber publicly and help strengthen its relationships within the community.
- Understand that the Board’s role is governance, strategic direction, and organizational stewardship—not management of day-to-day operations.
- Be a current (in good standing) chamber member for at least 1 year before applying.
