King County faces an estimated $50 million general-fund shortfall. This shortfall will mean significant reductions across the spectrum of services King County provides. Whether it is a reduction in the Sheriff’s Dept., the courts and jails, Public Defenders office, Human Services, or Assessor’s office, everyone is going to be affected. Metro fares will go up but will service be cut?
The budget is without a doubt the most challenging issue facing County Executive Dow Constantine and his Deputy, Fred Jarrett, but there are other issues to be dealt with as well. Cities have boundaries, but issues do not stop at those lines. They spill over into the next town or into the unincorporated area next to that city and they need to be dealt with. There needs to be continuity between cities and their surrounding area and King County is the entity that ties the entire region together.
Dow Constantine was sworn in as King County Executive on November 24, 2009. He served as a King County Council member for seven years, and has held elected office in Washington State for 13 years as a state representative and as state senator. He was appointed to the King County Council in 2002 and won election four times. A Seattle native, Dow graduated from West Seattle High School and the University of Washington. He earned University of Washington post-graduate degrees in law (1989) and urban planning (1992). Today, Dow lives in the West Seattle neighborhood where he grew up.
Fred Jarrett is Deputy County Executive, the highest-ranking staff position in the Executive Office. A Mercer Island resident, he has over twenty years experience in local government, including four as mayor of Mercer Island. He was also a member of the Puget Sound Regional Council, chaired both the Metro Transit Committee and the Joint Regional Planning Committee for high capacity transportation in Puget Sound, and served as President of the Suburban Cities of King County. He served two terms as a state representative before being elected to the state senate. He has served on the Mercer Island School Board as well. He had a 35-year career at The Boeing Company.
